For the Young & Young at Heart

Our Children: Keepers of the Bears, by Bill Breitsprecher. Every fall, I conduct a survey with my Kindergarten students to determine how many bears are in the community. Participation is voluntary – it’s a way to have fun with counting. Young children are enthusiastic about learning numbers. Click HERE to read more.

Children Love Their Teddy Bears, by Bill Breitsprecher. An enduring, traditional form of stuffed animal, Teddy Bears comfort children. The name Teddy Bear comes from one of Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trips. There were several other hunters competing, and most of them had already shot something. A few friends of Roosevelt who were hunting with hounds treed an American Black Bear after a long and exhausting chase and suggested Roosevelt shoot it. Click HERE to read more.

Community Building

Stop the Violence, by Alder Brian Soloman.  Greetings Allied neighbors and friends. I am sure you were as troubled as I was last week to hear that a homicide occurred in Avalon. While details are still sketchy, and it clearly was the freak result of a fight rather than a shooting, it still represents two fewer lives in our community. Both young, male, and black. One is dead; the other likely headed to prison.  Click HERE to read more.

Advocating for Fairness and Justice by Linda Ketcham.  Twenty years or so ago there was a skit on Saturday Night Live, part of a news commentary that contained the line "and remember, the meek will inherit the earth but that's okay because when they do we'll just push them down and take it back." It seemed funny at the time, now it seems rather haunting. Haunting because, at the national, state and local levels we have policy makers, community leaders and elected officials to adhere to this sort of twisted theology.

Alcohol Abuse Hurts Communities, Families, by: County Executive Kathleen Falk  In Dane County we see so much human misery and face enormous public safety, health and economic costs because of the misuse of alcohol. Our state has the absolute worst rates of underage, binge, and chronic heavy drinkers in the country. We're also worst for fatal car crashes caused by alcohol.  Click HERE to read more.

Social Drinking, Moderate Drinking, And Abuse, by Bill Breitsprecher.  Social drinking is a term that refers to drinking patterns that are considered “acceptable” among the people in which they occur. Different groups have different perspectives on when drinking is “normal.” People that drink heavily may have different ideas about what they consider “normal” drinking.  Click HERE to read more.
